Faia-da-terra passo a passo / Firetree step by step

I am much happier with this illustration than I was with the previous one, and meanwhile I have found a much better paper, which I am using for the remaining two plants I still need to complete. The firetree is a lovely evergreen shrub or small tree native to Macaronesia (the Azores, Madeira and Canary islands) although it is considered a noxious weed in Hawaii, where it has been introduced. The fruits are edible berries used as astringent remedy for catarrh.

Uva-da-serra passo a passo / Azores blueberry step by step

I'm not completely happy with this one, mainly because of the paper which, although of high quality, has a much rougher texture than I like for this kind of work. When I want detail, I need extremely smooth textures and I couldn't find what I wanted, but I will keep looking. Meanwhile, here is a small step by step sequence of one of the most beautiful endemic plants of the Azores islands.

Trabalho em curso / Work in Progress

Slowly but steadily, the plant illustrations are growing. I'm not taking count, but this one has many hours of work already... I decided to start with the most leafy species, so that as I progress into the others, work will hopefully become lighter.

Pleno Verão / In the height of summer

Summer is definitely not my favourite season. And of all the summer months, August is maybe the one I like the least: too hot, too many people and traffic almost everywhere. Not to mention the flies, which, as my mother used to say when I was little, seem to reproduce through abiogenesis...

But summer has good things too. Take early mornings, for instance. Although I'm not an earlybird, whenever I manage (or am forced to) wake up really early, in this time of the year, it feels really good to open the windows and let the fresh, crisp air in together with the morning sounds, while I sip my morning coffee and think about the tasks of the day that is about to begin. Fortunately, in the last days my tasks have included a considerable amount of drawing and painting for two illustration projects. These are some of the preliminary drawings I've been doing of what will (hopefully) become fully detailed scientific illustrations of the Azorean flora. I'll be back to show them when they get ready.
